What are Website Planning and Website Architecture?
Website planning is the process of identifying the needs of the website owner and website customers. The needs include how the business will be presented on the internet, how it will attract customers, the information delivered on the website and the functionality of the website.
Website architecture is the process of applying the needs of the website owner and website customers into the structure of the website. Website architecture includes:
- marketing - defining and understanding customers needs (including potential website customers) and using language that has meaning and is attractive for them;
- search engine optimisation - ensuring the website is found by potential customers when they search on the internet;
- usability - how website visitors will use the website, ensuring the website will be user-friendly;
- accessibility - ensuring the majority of people can easily access information and functionality on the website;
- website navigation - how the site map is structured and how website readers move around the website;
- budgeting - working within budget scope to provide the best solution and doing cost-benefit of functionality;
- content planning - planning and defining the text content that needs to be developed and written, planning and defining the images required for the website;
- monetising the website - how the website will produce income for the website owner eg e-commerce, selling online, affiliate marketing and advertising.
Think of an architect for building a house. They will understand how many people are in the house, how it will be lived in, what their preferences are, their budget and how their furniture fits in! You need an architect to define and interpret your needs.
Website Planning and Website Architecture happen before the process of web design and web development start. You wouldn't start building a house before you had a plan would you?
